The Marathan Across Britain/Coast to Coast Run is a spectacular and demanding ultra marathon trek across the north of the country, from the Irish Sea coast of Cumbria to the North Sea at Northumberland.
Travel is easy to get to the meeting point, on the mainline London to Glasgow railway, or by road on the M6 with Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester airports nearby. Likewise, travel is easy at the end, via the mainline East Coast (London to Edinburgh) railway, or by road on the A1, with Newcastle Airport very close by.
On the way across Britain from West to East, you will pass through some outstandingly beautiful and largely unspoilt areas of England, crossing bog, marsh, fell and plain as you perform this extreme trail journey across England on this 170 plus mile (275 kilometre) running challenge. This really is absolutely beautiful, wild and sometimes desolate country close to the Scottish border. This is not the well trodden coast to coast path, but an altogether more remote, beautiful, extremely challenging and largely unspoilt landcape (or landscapes) to the far North of England.
The event takes place over six days, each stage ending at camp where you rest, eat, sleep and prepare for the next day’s challenges.
This part of England is steeped in history as you pass the spot King Edward 1 died fighting Robert the Bruce of Scotland, Carlisle Castle (where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned and Bonnie Prince Charlie fought off the Duke of Cumberland) and Roman Forts as well as other remnants of the northern most reaches of the Roman Empire at Hadrian’s Wall. Trail running through the wild and sometimes desolate interior of England close to the Scottish border, the route takes you through truly beautiful, sparsely populated countryside through marsh and over fells to the east coast at Alnmouth where the Viking visitors first imposed their culture on the then Anglo-Saxon inhabitants.
Competitors carry all essential supplies with them each day, except for tents, as they make their way at their own pace, using their navigational skills, to reach the check-points and, ultimately, the end of each marathon stage. The atmosphere is competitive but inevitably leads to strong alliances being formed as people assist each other with the route, as well as the physical, mental and emotional difficulties that every competitor faces. The joy at reaching the end of stage, together with the mutual admiration of every competitor (no matter where you finish) and the awe of the spectators and others you meet, will be uplifting and make this an unforgettable experience. Both newcomers to this kind of ultra event and those with significant trail running experience will feel an incredible feeling of achievement as they cross the finish line having quite literally run a Marathon across Britain.
